Part VI: Short Answer Questions — 2 Marks (சுருக்கமான விடையளி)
Q1. Define Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
மொத்த உள்நாட்டு உற்பத்தி (GDP) - வரையறு.
- Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the total market value of all final goods and services produced within the domestic territory of a country during a specific period of time, normally one year.
- Key components:
- 1. Market value of final goods and services.
- 2. Produced within the geographic borders of the nation.
- 3. Measured across one financial year.
Q2. What are the three sectors of Indian economy?
இந்தியப் பொருளாதாரத்தின் மூன்று துறைகள் யாவை?
- The Indian economy is classified into three main sectors:
- 1. Primary Sector (Agricultural Sector): Directly uses natural resources (Agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining).
- 2. Secondary Sector (Industrial Sector): Transforms raw materials into finished commodities through manufacturing (Iron and steel, automobiles, textiles).
- 3. Tertiary Sector (Service Sector): Provides essential services (Transport, banking, communication, healthcare, education, IT).
Q3. What is meant by Intermediate Goods? Give an example.
இடைநிலை பண்டங்கள் என்றால் என்ன? உதாரணம் தருக.
- Intermediate goods are goods that are used as inputs or raw materials in the production process of other goods rather than being consumed directly by the end consumer.
- Example: Tea powder, milk, and sugar used by a tea vendor to prepare tea are intermediate goods. The final cup of tea served to the customer is the final good.
- In estimating GDP, only the value of the final good is counted to strictly avoid double counting.
Part VII: Long Answer Questions — 5 / 7 Marks (விரிவான விடையளி)
Q1. Briefly explain various methods of calculating Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
மொத்த உள்நாட்டு உற்பத்தியைக் (GDP) கணக்கிடும் பல்வேறு முறைகளைச் சுருக்கமாக விவரிக்கவும்.
1. Expenditure Approach
- In this method, GDP is calculated by adding the total expenditures incurred on all final goods and services produced in the country during a year.
- Standard Formula: Y = C + I + G + (X - M)
- C (Consumption): Spending by households on consumer goods and services.
- I (Investment): Spending by businesses on capital goods (machinery, buildings).
- G (Government Expenditure): Government spending on infrastructure, defense, schools.
- X - M (Net Exports): Exports (X) minus Imports (M).
2. Income Approach
- This approach views GDP from the perspective of earnings received by factors of production (land, labour, capital, and organization) engaged in producing goods and services.
- Formula: Y = Wages + Rent + Interest + Profit
- Wages: Compensation of employees for labour.
- Rent: Reward for use of land and buildings.
- Interest: Return on capital invested.
- Profit: Reward to the entrepreneur/organizer.
3. Value Added Approach
- In this method, the money value added to the product at each stage of production is added together to determine GDP.
- Gross Value Added (GVA) = Value of Output - Value of Intermediate Consumption.
- Example: When wheat (raw material, ₹10) is turned into flour (intermediate good, ₹15), value added is ₹5. When flour is baked into bread (final good, ₹25), value added is ₹10. Total value added = 10 + 5 + 10 = ₹25.
- This approach strictly avoids the grave problem of double counting.
